12 email marketing best practices from our Klaviyo experts

Keeping up with an evolving DTC landscape is no easy task, with so many areas of your online business demanding attention.

That said, the power of email marketing in building community, retaining customers and boosting revenue cannot be overstated.

Our email marketing experts have curated a concise and current list of best practices. Got questions? Reach out to our team.

1. Create audience segments

Understand your customer’s behaviour by looking at their browsing history, past purchases, predictive analytics and engagement metrics. Segment to create opportunities for deeper personalisation and connection.

2. Collect zero-party data

Encourage your customers to share their preferences and intentions. This can be achieved through quizzes, surveys, or email preferences settings, and offers you the insights needed to tailor your communications.

3. Conduct good housekeeping
  • Clean your list regularly: A tidy email list is a responsive one. Regularly remove unengaged subscribers to improve your deliverability and engagement metrics. Need more info on this? Check out this blog.
  • Quality matters more than quantity: Email marketing is a potent tool for reaching your audience, but bombarding recipients with too many emails can result in high unsubscribe and spam complaint rates.
  • Always include an unsubscribe option: This ensures a healthy list of engaged shoppers.

4. A/B test

Experiment with different subject lines to see what resonates best with your audience, and run your subject lines through a spam checker, to ensure you’re reaching inboxes.

Conducting A/B tests across different elements of your email - from calls to action (CTAs) to design elements - is important for increasing Click Through Rates and Placed Order Rates.

Here are some guidelines:

  • Test one element at a time: This approach ensures that any performance differences can be attributed to that specific change.
  • Iterate based on findings: Once a test reveals a more effective element, incorporate this into your main strategy and then proceed to test another.
  • Adopt continuous testing: Your product and audience evolves over time, what works today may not work tomorrow.

5. Make your preview text count

The preview text is your second chance to make a first impression. Write a compelling teaser to complement your subject line and encourage clicks.

6. Personalise your emails

Using the recipient's name in the subject line and body of the email has been shown to increase open rates. The everyday consumer is savvy enough to know this email isn’t a personal conversation, but using their name is a good way to catch their attention.

This applies to the body of the email too, there are plenty of personalisation tags available on platforms like Klaviyo; such as organisation, phone number, recently viewed items, and expected date of next order.

7. Craft a compelling CTA

A call-to-action (CTA) is where intention turns into action. To make your CTA irresistible be specific; use action words that create a sense of urgency or benefit, like "Shop Now," "Get Your Guide," or "Join Free for a Month."

8. Leverage data with AI Tools

In a data-driven landscape, sifting through heaps of data for actionable insights can be resource-draining. Here, AI tools shine, offering sophisticated analytics and predictive modelling to fine-tune your campaigns.

Klaviyo has just released AI-powered segmentation, email, and SMS tools to help brands save time testing emails, copywriting, and driving better engagement. The features include:

  • Segments AI, which generates complex segments based on simple audience prompts.
  • Email AI, that allows users to input campaign goals and create on-brand emails in seconds.
  • SMS AI to create SMS campaigns and generate fast SMS replies to customers.
  • Forms AI which uses AI to optimise web forms for conversion by testing multiple versions of the form to find the highest-converting display time.

9. Don’t use a no-reply email address

It’s off putting. Encourage dialogue and feedback by using a reply-to email address. This makes your brand more approachable and can provide valuable insights to fuel developments in all areas of your business.

10. Optimal email length

For value-led emails, the ideal length is between 50 to 125 words. However, the effectiveness of an email isn't just in its length, but also in the relevance and quality of the content delivered to the audience.

Important note! The same rules don’t apply for transactional emails such as order confirmations. Check out Klaviyo’s advice on this type of communication here

11. Reward your VIPs

Reward your VIPs for their engagement and loyalty with exclusive offers and early access to new products. Ask for their feedback to guide improvements and to understand your customer journey.

12. Test before you send

Before you hit send, conduct thorough tests to catch issues such as rendering errors, typographical mistakes, broken links, or content that might be flagged as spam.

Ensure your email displays correctly across different devices to maximise readability and engagement. A clean, error-free email results in better engagement and more trusting customers.
