Welcome to Superco: On Shopify, a weekly bulletin to keep you up to date with Shopify Plus news and updates. 

Each week, we send a snapshot of Shopify developments and our expert opinion on how they can help optimise your online store.

This week is another busy one, with two big updates not to be missed. Read on for more information about the Shopify Tax Platform, and extensibility changes that offer exciting opportunities to enhance your customer experience.

Update and automate gift card email sending with on/off toggle, now available in admin settings (Nov 03)

This update reduces the steps for gift card creation and gives merchants more control over what gift card emails are sent to customers. Shopify merchants can now preview gift card emails before they are sent and control whether or not gift cards are sent automatically on creation.

Update:

 Shopify merchants can now preview gift card emails before they are sent. and 

Shopify merchants can now control whether or not gift cards are sent automatically on creation.

The default gift card email-sending setting can be adjusted in Shopify admin settings.

Additional notes:

  • Gift card emails that are sent manually will still be sent immediately.
  • Gift card emails sent automatically will be sent within 24 hours of gift card creation.
  • Merchants can override the default sending behaviour for individual gift cards.

Follow these steps to use this new feature:  

  1. To preview a gift card email, go to Gift Cards > Settings in your Shopify admin.
  2. Under "Gift Card Emails," click the "Preview" button next to the email you want to preview.
  3. To control whether or not gift cards are sent automatically on creation, go to Gift Cards > Settings in your Shopify admin.
  4. Under "Gift Card Emails," check or uncheck the "Send gift cards automatically" box.
  5. To adjust the default setting for gift card email sending, go to Gift Cards > Settings in your Shopify admin.
  6. Under "Gift Card Emails," select the desired option from the "Default sending behaviour" drop-down menu.

New granular staff permissions for Orders (Nov 03)

Shopify merchants now have 12 new granular staff permissions for Orders, which gives merchants more control over staff access to specific actions on orders.

New permissions include: View orders, Manage order information, Apply discounts, Set payment terms, Capture payments, Mark as paid, Fulfil and ship orders, Buy shipping labels, Return, Cancel orders, Delete orders, and Manage abandoned checkouts. 

Connect your preferred tax service to Shopify with the Shopify Tax Platform (Nov 06)

Shopify has launched the Shopify Tax Platform for all merchants. The tax platform allows merchants to integrate their preferred tax service with Shopify rather than using Shopify’s solutions for Sales Tax calculations. Combined with tax calculations in Shopify’s checkout, this move should remove the need for manual tax calculations.

Vertex, Inc. is Shopify's first tax platform partner; more are coming. 

Extensibility is now available for Plus merchants on thank you and order status pages (Nov 07)

This is Shopify’s most significant update this week. It offers opportunities to improve customer experience and add value through improved retention and AOV.

Merchants can make code-free customisations with apps or develop custom apps for more bespoke customisations. Extensible Thank You and Order Status pages are now compatible with checkout branding.

Cross-sell and upsell:

Display product recommendations based on the customer's purchase history or browsing behaviour. Superco recommends all brands offer a post-purchase upsell.

Promote product collections:

Highlight relevant products that align with the customer's interests to show them what they’re missing out on, and they’ll be more likely to return. 

Showcase brand stories and values:

Share personalised messages or videos reinforcing the brand's identity and mission. You could invite them to an event such as a run club that builds community and reinforces your values. 

Offer personalised coupons or discounts:

Provide exclusive discounts or promotions as a thank you for their purchase. For example, giving a discount if the customer transfers their order to a subscription is a good way of improving LTV.

Encourage social sharing:

Integrate social sharing buttons to amplify brand visibility and customer engagement.

Order status page:

Provide real-time order tracking:

Display detailed order tracking information, including shipment status, estimated delivery dates, and tracking numbers.

Offer easy return options:

Include clear instructions and links for initiating returns or exchanges.

Provide product support resources:

Link to relevant FAQs, product manuals, or customer support channels.

Offer extended warranties or protection plans:

Promote extended warranty options or protection plans for purchased products.

Encourage customer reviews:

Prompt customers to leave reviews of their purchased products to foster trust and credibility.

Cross-sell:

If the customer is viewing their order status, they might be interested in some of your other products. Shop adjacent products and services.

Important dates to remember:

  • August 13, 2024: checkout.liquid will no longer work for in-checkout pages.
  • August 28, 2025: checkout.liquid, apps with script tags, and additional scripts will no longer work on the Thank You and Order Status pages.

Cancel orders and void transactions on POS (Nov 08)

Brands can now cancel orders directly in the POS terminal within 15 minutes of the order being placed. Permission to cancel can be provided to select employee permissions. 

New: Support for visual filters (Nov 08)

Merchants using the Search and Discovery app can now add colour and image filtering to collections. This feature is helpful for brands looking to make collection filters more engaging. We see this applied to home decor, electronics and fashion collection pages.
