Facts about Visualsoft are from Visualsoft’s own website and Terms of Business (version 5.1), Companies House and Shopify’s partner directory. Shopify facts are from Shopify’s help center and pricing pages. All were checked on 30 October 2026. Both businesses change often, so check the sources listed at the end before you decide.
Visualsoft, a Teesside business founded in 1998, built its name on its own ecommerce platform for UK retailers. In 2024 it became a Shopify partner, and it has since been moving its own clients to Shopify. So brands on the Visualsoft platform are asking a fair question: stay, move to Shopify with Visualsoft, or move to Shopify with someone else? We moved Global Knives from Visualsoft to Shopify in 2025. This guide compares the Visualsoft platform with Shopify as they stand in 2026, and sets out the contract points to check before you decide.
The short answer
- The Visualsoft platform is a hosted, fully managed service for small and medium-sized retailers. Visualsoft designs the store, owns the code and makes changes for you.
- Shopify is hosted software that you or any Shopify partner can build on, with published pricing, an open API and a large app store.
- Visualsoft’s standard contract runs for 24 months and renews automatically unless you give notice at least 90 days before the end of the term. Check your own contract before you plan a move.
- The Visualsoft platform suits retailers who want one supplier to design, host and run the store for a monthly fee. Shopify suits brands that want control of their store, their roadmap and their choice of partners.

Visualsoft now describes itself as a commerce agency and is listed in Shopify’s partner directory as a Shopify Platinum Partner. Its website still offers its own platform alongside Shopify, describing it as fully hosted and designed for small to medium-sized businesses. When it announced the Shopify partnership in May 2024, Visualsoft said it would keep investing in its own platform. Since then it has been moving its own clients to Shopify: CHO, a Visualsoft client since 2014, was the first, followed by WALK London and Leader Online. Visualsoft has not announced an end date for its platform, but its website now leads with Shopify, and Shopify’s partner directory lists it as a Platinum Partner. For most brands on the Visualsoft platform, the decision now is when to move to Shopify, and with which partner.

Who controls the store
This is the main difference. On the Visualsoft platform, Visualsoft designs and runs the store. Its Terms of Business say that, unless agreed otherwise, the design of the website ‘shall be determined solely by Visualsoft’, and that the intellectual property in its services belongs to Visualsoft, with the client holding a license for the term of the contract.
Changes and new integrations go through Visualsoft. The platform has an API, but it is not public: integration partners such as Mintsoft tell merchants to ask their Visualsoft account manager for credentials, which may carry a charge. Glopal’s set-up guide quotes a lead time of two to four weeks for Visualsoft to add a feature integration.
On Shopify, the store is yours to change. Your team edits content, promotions and pages in the admin, and any Shopify partner or developer can work on the theme, apps and integrations. If you change agency, the store stays where it is.
Contracts and leaving
Visualsoft publishes its Terms of Business. Under version 5.1:
- The default initial term is 24 months. It renews automatically for a further term of the same length unless the client gives valid notice at least 90 days before the term ends (clause 4.2).
- Discussing termination, or refusing to sign a new agreement, does not stop the renewal on its own (clause 4.2.6).
- Fees can rise each year in line with RPI, and with third-party costs or changes in scope (clause 7.4).
- If the client ends the contract early, fees for the rest of the term become due, unless Visualsoft is in breach or insolvent (clause 16.1).
- On termination, the client must ask in writing for a copy of its data within 30 days. Visualsoft provides it in a standard export format of its choosing once all fees are paid, and does not have to provide source code or configuration (clause 16.3).
Your own contract may differ, so read it before you plan a move. The dates matter most: miss the notice window and the contract renews for another full term.
On Shopify Plus, you agree a one-year or three-year term with Shopify. You can export products, customers and orders from the admin at any time, and your theme and content stay on the store if you change agency.
Payments and PCI compliance
The Visualsoft platform offers VS Pay, powered by Stripe, with cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Klarna, Clearpay, PayPal and Amazon Pay among its methods. Visualsoft’s terms say it does not handle, store or process cardholder data, and that it maintains PCI DSS Level 1 service provider compliance for the parts of the platform it runs. The client stays responsible for its own compliance.
Shopify is certified as a Level 1 PCI DSS provider and hosts its own checkout. Shopify Payments, Shop Pay and other providers are available, and Shopify Plus brands can customize the checkout with checkout extensions and Shopify Functions.
Apps and integrations
Visualsoft says its platform has over 1,000 features, and adds third-party integrations through its own team. It does not publish a developer marketplace. Fulfillment and warehouse tools such as Mintsoft connect through its SOAP API.
The Shopify App Store lists over 16,000 apps that install without a developer, and most email, subscription, review, loyalty, search and warehouse tools have a Shopify app. Global Knives now runs Octane AI, Klaviyo, Rebuy, Xero, Shiptheory, Klarna and Feefo on Shopify.
Selling more widely
Visualsoft lists Amazon and eBay integrations for its platform. Its platform pages do not describe trade (B2B) selling, several languages or several stores, so ask Visualsoft directly if you need them.
Shopify has B2B on every plan, fuller on Plus, and Shopify Markets sells in other countries with local currencies, languages and domains from one store. Plus adds up to nine expansion stores. Shopify Marketplace Connect lists products on Amazon, eBay and other marketplaces. See Shopify B2B and international expansion.
What it costs to run
Visualsoft does not publish its prices. Its pricing page describes a monthly fee with no large upfront cost, covering hosting, design, support and tools. Shopify publishes its plan prices (see Shopify vs Shopify Plus), and build and support are priced by your chosen partner. Compare these over three years:
- Platform or plan fee, and how it can rise
- Design and build
- Changes, support and new features
- Apps and integrations
- Payment processing fees
- Contract length, notice periods and exit costs
Our Shopify Plus total cost of ownership calculator adds up the Shopify side.
When the Visualsoft platform still makes sense
- You want one supplier to design, host, change and support the store for a single monthly fee.
- You have no in-house ecommerce or development team and do not plan to build one.
- The platform does what you need today, including its Amazon and eBay integrations.
- You are happy for Visualsoft to decide the design and the order of new features.
When Shopify is the better fit
- You want to own your store’s code and content and choose your own partners.
- Your team wants to run content, promotions and launches without raising a ticket.
- You want to add apps and integrations in days rather than weeks.
- You plan to sell to trade customers or in other countries.
- You want published pricing and shorter, clearer contract terms.
Moving from Visualsoft to Shopify
Start with the contract. Note the end of your current term and the 90-day notice date, and plan the build so the new store is ready before the contract ends. Ask Visualsoft for a data export early, and agree the format.
A Visualsoft to Shopify migration moves products, customers and historical orders, and sets up a redirect from every old URL so you keep your search rankings. Customer passwords cannot be moved. Shopify’s new customer accounts sign shoppers in with a one-time code sent by email, so no password is needed.
For Global Knives, we moved around 500 products, customers and order history from Visualsoft, carried the SEO across, and rebuilt search and navigation, with a ‘Find My Knife’ quiz built with Octane AI. The new store launched in September 2025. See the Global Knives case study and Shopify migration.
Questions to ask before you choose
- When does your Visualsoft term end, and when is the last date to give notice?
- What will Visualsoft charge for a data export or handover, and in what format?
- Which features and integrations do you rely on, and which have a Shopify app?
- Who will build and support the Shopify store, and on what terms?
- Do you plan to sell to trade customers, abroad or on marketplaces?
- What does your team want to change on the store without asking a supplier?
FAQs
Is Visualsoft a Shopify partner?
Yes. Visualsoft announced a Shopify partnership in May 2024 and is listed in Shopify’s partner directory as a Platinum Partner. It still offers its own platform as well.
Is Visualsoft the same as Shopify?
No. The Visualsoft platform is Visualsoft’s own hosted ecommerce platform. Shopify is a separate platform that Visualsoft, Superco and other partners build on.
Is Shopify cheaper than Visualsoft?
It depends on the build and support you need. Visualsoft does not publish prices. Shopify does. Compare the total over three years, including contract terms and exit costs.
Can I leave a Visualsoft contract early?
Under Visualsoft’s standard terms, ending early makes the fees for the rest of the term due, unless Visualsoft is in breach or insolvent. The contract renews automatically unless you give notice at least 90 days before the term ends. Check your own contract.
Can I take my data from Visualsoft to Shopify?
Yes. Visualsoft’s terms say it will provide a copy of your data on request within 30 days of termination, in a standard export format, once fees are paid. Products, customers and orders can then be imported into Shopify.
Will we lose SEO rankings moving from Visualsoft to Shopify?
Not if the migration maps every old URL to a redirect, keeps page titles and content, and is checked in Search Console after launch. Global Knives carried its search traffic across.
Can customers keep their passwords?
No. Passwords cannot be moved to Shopify. With Shopify’s new customer accounts, customers sign in with a one-time code by email.
