Figures are from Recharge, Recurly, Stripe, Visa, Shopify and Klaviyo, and the legal points from legislation.gov.uk, gov.uk, the FTC and US law firms, all checked on 31 October 2026. Recharge measures churn per renewal and other vendors measure it differently, so compare figures only within the same source. This is not legal advice. Sources are listed at the end.
Most subscription brands lose subscribers early. Recharge’s data on supplement brands shows the biggest fall comes at the second reorder, and that subscribers who are offered a swap or a delay instead of cancelling often stay. In the UK, new rules from 1 January 2027 also change how reminders and cancellation must work. This guide sets out where subscribers leave, the seven changes that keep them, and how to get ready for the new rules. It comes from a Recharge Elite partner that has built subscription stores and customer portals for brands including Ursa Major, Minor Figures and Years.
The short answer
- Churn is decided in the first two or three orders. Spend most effort on onboarding, the first delivery and the second reorder.
- Give subscribers ways to stay: skip, delay, swap and change frequency, from the portal and from emails.
- Build a cancellation flow that offers the right alternative for each reason, and lets people leave easily if they still want to. UK and several US rules now require that.
- Treat failed payments as a separate problem, with smart retries, expiry warnings and easy card updates.
- Measure churn by renewal, by reason and by cohort, and keep payment failures apart from cancellations.
Where subscribers leave
Recharge measured active churn, meaning subscribers who cancel, as a share of scheduled renewals between July 2025 and June 2026.
| Category | Active churn per renewal |
|---|---|
| Food | 13.3% |
| Pet supplies | 15.6% |
| Supplements | 17.8% |
| Health and wellness | 18.7% |
| Coffee and tea | 21.1% |
| Beauty | 21.2% |
Source: Recharge, supplement subscription retention, data from about 1,750 brands, July 2025 to June 2026. These rates are per renewal.
For supplement brands, 75.2% of subscribers reached their first reorder, 49.1% their second, 34.4% their third and 15.5% their sixth. The largest single fall, 26 points, came at the second reorder. Across 13,158 brands, Recharge found that monthly subscribers who churn leave after about 77 days on average.
Billing cadence also matters. Recharge’s cohorts show cumulative churn, including failed payments, of 84.2% for monthly subscriptions, 67.7% for quarterly and 30.1% for annual. Part of that gap is who chooses each plan, but it is a reason to offer longer cadences.
Two kinds of churn
Voluntary churn is a subscriber deciding to cancel. Involuntary churn is a subscription ending because a payment fails. Recurly’s 2026 benchmarks put involuntary churn at about a third of the total for ecommerce subscriptions, and Recharge says 7% of recurring charges fail at the first attempt. The fixes are different, so measure and treat them separately.
1. Win the first two orders
The first delivery sets expectations for the rest of the subscription. Before it arrives, send onboarding emails or SMS that explain how to use the product, when the next order ships and how to change it. After it arrives, ask how it went.
How subscribers start also matters. In Recharge’s data, 32.8% of subscribers who paid a nominal price for their first order reached a sixth order, against 8.7% of those whose first order was free. Recharge notes this shows an association and does not prove cause. It suggests a free first box attracts people who never meant to stay.
Personalising the plan at sign-up helps subscribers get the right product and quantity from the start. For Years, a dog food brand, we built a quiz that asks about each dog’s size, age and breed, works out how much food it needs and turns that plan into a Recharge subscription. See the Years case study.
2. Make the subscription easy to change
Many subscribers cancel because the timing or the product is wrong. Let them skip, delay, swap products and change frequency without contacting you, from the customer portal and from reminder emails.
Recharge’s data shows why. Of supplement subscribers shown an alternative on the cancel screen, 66% of those who swapped a product placed another order, as did 53% who delayed, 49% who took a discount and 44% who skipped. Of those who cancelled outright, fewer than 2% reordered.
The portal is where subscribers make these choices, so design it like part of the store. Minor Figures cut subscription churn by 15% after we built a custom Recharge account area. If you use Shopify’s own Subscriptions app, check what it offers: customers can skip, pause, resume, cancel and update payment and address details, but its help centre does not list frequency changes or product swaps.
Remember that most renewals happen without the subscriber visiting your store. Recharge says 71.5% of renewals process with no storefront visit, so reminder emails, SMS and the portal do most of the work.
3. Build a cancellation flow that saves without trapping
Ask why the subscriber is leaving, then offer the alternative that fits the reason: a delay for too much stock, a swap for the wrong product, a smaller quantity or longer interval for cost. Vendors report that this works. Recharge says its cancellation flows save up to 33% of cancellations. Loop reports that Four Sigmatic raised its save rate from 4.84% to 9.55% by showing three offers at once instead of one. Treat both as vendor claims, and test offers on your own subscribers.
The flow must also let people leave. In the UK, the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024 requires exit to be straightforward, without steps that are not reasonably necessary, and online if the subscriber signed up online. The government has said save offers and feedback questions are allowed, but must not frustrate or unreasonably lengthen the process. In the US, California allows one save offer only if a clear cancel option is shown with it, Colorado requires a one-step online cancellation link, and New York City has required cancellation to be as easy as sign-up since 1 October 2026.
A good rule: one screen of tailored offers, a clear button to cancel anyway, and a confirmation. Count the clicks from ‘cancel’ to cancelled and keep them low.
4. Stop payments failing quietly
Involuntary churn is the easiest to fix because the subscriber did not choose to leave. The main tools:
- Smart retries. Payment providers and subscription apps retry failed charges at times most likely to succeed. Stripe’s recommended default is eight tries within two weeks, and it does not retry hard declines such as lost or stolen cards until the customer adds a new card.
- Warnings before cards expire. Stripe emails customers a month before a card expires, and Shop Pay now warns subscribers before their payment method expires.
- Easy card updates. Let subscribers update their card from the email that tells them a payment failed, without logging in where possible. Since Shopify’s Spring 2026 Edition, customer account extensions can update subscription payment methods directly.
- Network tokens and card updaters. These keep card details current when cards are reissued. Visa reports a 4.3% increase in successful card-not-present transactions with network tokens. Automatic card updates are widely supported in the US, but Stripe says coverage elsewhere varies.
- Strong Customer Authentication. In the UK and EU, the first payment must be authenticated. Renewals can then run as merchant-initiated transactions, but banks can still ask for authentication. Shopify Flow can trigger a reminder when a billing attempt needs the customer to confirm.
Decide what happens when retries run out: skip the order, pause the subscription or cancel it. Pausing keeps the door open. Recurly found that three in four subscribers who pause eventually return.
5. Offer longer cadences
Quarterly and annual plans churn far less over their lifetime in Recharge’s data. Offer them at sign-up and as an upgrade once a subscriber has a few orders behind them, with a reason to commit, such as a better price or a gift.
6. Reward staying
Loyalty works best for subscribers when the rewards are tied to staying, such as a gift at the sixth order or credit that builds with each renewal. Recharge reports that Auri’s active churn fell 21.4% after it added gifts that unlock between the sixth and tenth orders. Show the next reward in the portal and in reminder emails, so subscribers can see what they would give up.
7. Measure it properly
- Track churn per renewal and by order number, so you can see the fall at the second or third order.
- Record the cancellation reason, and report saves by offer and by reason.
- Keep payment failures separate from cancellations.
- Use Shopify’s cohort analysis report, filtered to customers whose first order was a subscription, to compare retention by month of sign-up.
- Use Klaviyo’s predicted churn risk and expected next order date to trigger flows. Klaviyo needs at least 500 customers with orders and 180 days of history.

Getting ready for the UK rules
The Consumer Subscription Contracts regulations under the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024 are due to come into force on 1 January 2027. In outline:
- Clear information before sign-up.
- Reminder notices, in writing, before the first renewal after a free or discounted period, then every six months, and before each renewal of a 12-month term.
- A 14-day cooling-off period at the start, and again after a free or discounted trial ends or a 12-month contract renews. For perishable goods, traders can deduct the value of goods already supplied.
- A straightforward way to cancel, online if sign-up was online.
Before January, review your sign-up page, reminder emails, portal and cancellation flow against the rules, and take legal advice on your own terms. In the US, the FTC’s click-to-cancel rule was struck down in July 2025 and the FTC is consulting again, while state laws in California, New York, Colorado and Louisiana already apply.

FAQs
What is a good churn rate for a subscription brand?
It depends on the category and how churn is measured. Recharge’s data shows active churn per renewal from 13.3% for food to 21.2% for beauty. Compare yourself with your own past cohorts first.
When do most subscribers cancel?
Early. In Recharge’s supplement data, the largest fall comes at the second reorder, and monthly subscribers who churn leave after about 77 days on average.
Are save offers allowed under the UK rules?
Yes. The government has said traders can make offers and ask for feedback when a subscriber cancels, as long as this does not frustrate or unreasonably lengthen the process.
When do the UK subscription rules start?
The government has said 1 January 2027.
How do we reduce failed payments?
Use smart retries, warn subscribers before their card expires, make card updates easy from the failure email, and keep failed payments separate from cancellations in your reporting.
Does Shopify’s own Subscriptions app do all this?
It covers the basics: skip, pause, cancel, payment updates, reminders and retry settings. Brands that want product swaps, tailored cancellation offers, bundles or loyalty tied to subscriptions usually use Recharge or a similar app.
