Shopify freelancer vs agency: which do you need?
A good Shopify freelancer is the right choice for many stores. This page sets out when a freelancer is enough, the signs you have outgrown one, and what an agency adds.
The short answer
- A freelancer suits small changes, a single skill, or a store that is not yet a large share of revenue.
- An agency suits work that needs several skills at once, such as strategy, design, development, SEO and testing, or a store the business cannot afford to have down.
- The main difference is cover. A freelancer is one person. An agency keeps working when someone is ill or on holiday.
Freelancer and agency compared
| Freelancer | Agency | |
|---|---|---|
| Skills | Usually one, such as development or design | Strategy, UX, design, development, SEO, CRO and email in one team |
| Cover | One person; holidays and illness stop work | A team, with a named account manager |
| Capacity | Limited hours each week | Several people can work in parallel before a launch |
| Process | Varies by person | Defined discovery, design, build, testing and launch |
| Cost | Lower day rate | Higher day rate, often fewer days for complex work |
| Best for | Small fixes, theme tweaks, single tasks | Builds, migrations, integrations and ongoing growth |
Signs you have outgrown a freelancer
- Releases wait until one person is free.
- You need design, development and SEO at the same time, from different people who do not talk to each other.
- Nobody can say what the code does, or the store slows down after each change.
- A migration, B2B channel or ERP integration is coming, and nobody owns the plan.
- The store matters too much to the business to depend on one person.
What to check in an agency
- Who will do the work, and whether they are employed by the agency. Ours are: 33 people, all in-house.
- Its Shopify Partner tier. Superco is a Platinum Partner.
- Whether you own the code. Our clients do.
- How you reach them after launch. Each client has an account manager and a Slack channel.
‘Their enthusiasm and passion to find the best solutions are highly commendable.’
Taking over from a freelancer or another agency
We often take over stores from freelancers and other agencies. We start with a technical audit of the code, apps and integrations, fix structural problems, and then start improving the store. For London Nootropics we stabilised the site after an unstable build, then ran A/B tests across the funnel.

FAQs
Can we keep our freelancer and use an agency too?
Yes. Some clients keep a freelancer for small changes and use us for larger projects and growth work. We agree who owns what so work does not overlap.
Is an agency more expensive than a freelancer?
The day rate is higher. For complex work, an agency often needs fewer days because several specialists work in parallel and the process is set. Cost depends on scope, so we price each project after discovery.
Will you work with code a freelancer wrote?
Yes. We audit it first, then tell you what to keep, fix or rebuild.
